John F. Hanson
John F. Hanson is of counsel to the firm. Mr. Hanson’s work in estate planning, probate, trusts, real estate, and land-title matters have made him a highly respected member of the Nebraska legal community. John is a McCook native. He graduated from McCook High School in 1957 and earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Doane College in 1961. He received his law degree in 1964, graduating with disctinction from the University of Michigan Law School. He was admitted to the Nebraska State Bar that same year.
John has been extensively involved in the Nebraska State Bar Association throughout his career. He served on the Real Estate, Probate and Trust Section Board and chaired that section from 1987 to 1988. He has also served for many years on the Real Estate Practice Guidelines Committee, including as its chair, and has participated as a speaker and seminar planner on matters involving real estate, probate, and trust law. He served on the Sixth Supreme Court District Committee on Inquiry (Ethics) from 1992 to 1999. His professional service also includes leadership in the Nebraska Land Title Association, where he served on the board and as president from 1987 to 1988.
John has been a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) since 1985. Fellowship in ACTEC is extended to experienced trust and estate attorneys who have demonstrated a high level of professional skill, integrity, and service to the profession.
Bryant J. Brooks
J. Bryant Brooks is a 1980 graduate of Creighton University School of Law and has practiced law in Nebraska for his entire career. Early in his career, he served as Hitchcock County Attorney and has provided legal counsel to area communities, gaining broad experience in both public service and local government law.
Mr. Brooks later served as an in-house legal counsel for Mutual of Omaha before joining a large Omaha law firm, where he further developed his skills across a broad range of legal areas. This combination of public sector, in-house, and large-firm experience has given him a well-rounded perspective that he continues to bring to his clients.
Throughout his career, Mr. Brooks has successfully tried numerous jury cases involving criminal prosecution, criminal defense, and personal injury. That experience, along with his appellate practice before the Court of Appeals and the Nebraska Supreme Court, give him extensive courtroom experience and a practical understanding of litigation from multiple perspectives.
Mr. Brooks is a past president of the Western Nebraska Bar Association and the McCook Rotary Club. He has been active with numerous other civic organizations throughout the community. Today, his practice focuses primarily on real estate, business/corporate, oil and gas, estate planning, personal injury and probate.
Nathan A. Schneider
City Manager, City of McCook, NebraskaNathan A. Schneider (“Nate”) was hired as City Manager for the City of McCook in June 2014. Prior to accepting that position, Nate served as City Attorney for McCook from 2007 to 2014, and also served as counsel for the Villages of Indianola and Bartley. Nate moved to McCook when he was 12 years old and graduated from McCook Senior High in 1993.
Nate obtained his Associate of Arts degree (summa cum laude) from McCook Community College, where he made the Dean’s List both years. He then attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, earning his Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in May 2008, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Criminal Justice. Nate went on to the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln, where he earned his Juris Doctorate with distinction in May 2012. Only a year out of law school, he was involved in two cases argued before the Nebraska Supreme Court—one of them pitting him against one of the more respected attorneys practicing in the state today, Dave Domina.
After practicing law in Ogallala for two years at the law office of Lane and Williams, P.C., L.L.O., Nate returned to Southwest Nebraska in 2014 to continue his career at Mousel, Brooks, Garner and Schneider, P.C., L.L.O. in McCook. He had earlier worked as an Associate Attorney for three years at Mousel and Garner before the partnership of Mousel, Brooks, Garner and Schneider was formed in 2010.
Nate is actively involved in the community. He has served on the Community Hospital Foundation, the CASA Board of Directors, and as President of the Historic 14th Judicial Bar District. He has volunteered as a coach for various athletic teams and is a past member of the McCook YMCA Board of Directors and the McCook Optimist Club, as well as a 2002 Leadership McCook graduate. Nate has also served as an adjunct professor for McCook Community College, teaching Business Law for five years and Western Civilization for one year.
Nathaniel J. Mustion
Attorney at LawNathaniel J. Mustion (“Nate”) grew up on a farm between McCook and Culbertson, Nebraska. He attended Culbertson High School and, after graduating, farmed alongside his family for several years before deciding to pursue a career in law.
Nate earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2008, graduating summa cum laude with a major in Political Science and a minor in Criminal Justice. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln, where he graduated with honors in 2012.
Nate began his legal career with the law firm of Lane and Williams in Ogallala, where he practiced until 2014, when he joined his current firm, Mousel, Brooks, Schneider, Mustion & Shifflet, P.C., L.L.O., in McCook.
His primary practice areas are municipal law, family law, and general civil litigation. Nate serves as City Attorney for the City of McCook and as Village Attorney for Bartley and Holbrook. In his family law practice, he places particular emphasis on high-net-worth divorces, with specialized experience in farm and agricultural divorces. His civil litigation practice includes personal injury matters, in which he has helped clients obtain multi-million dollar settlements.
Nate remains closely tied to his agricultural roots and continues to help manage his family’s farm alongside his siblings. He is married to Amanda Mustion, a surgical nurse at McCook Community Hospital, and together they have a daughter. Aside from practicing law, his passion in life is traveling the world with his family. He and Amanda are avid scuba divers.
